Datsun, that car which has run forever without giving me much trouble except for some wear around the body, wear you have to accept when you roll up the mileage. I’m hoping to find a woman like that some day.
Not only is my car a source of transportation, it is fast becoming my place of residence. Papers, notepads, fast-food milkshakes, banana peels are roosting on the floor in the front. Slowly, it’s starting to look like a construction site in Front Royal. Already it smells a lot like Front Royal.
This is a time when it’s easy to say how wonderful life will be here in this new place, how much I will enjoy working here, wish you were here and send money.
So I won’t try to imagine what it will be like here. More times than not, when I try to project outcomes of things I can’t control, my anticipation normally causes me to be disappointed in the long run. That’s why Super Bowls are so boring.
So let’s not get into that, other than to say that I’ve already met a few of you, and you haven’t run me out of town yet.
For the time being, I’ll take that as a small, but terribly important, victory.
So, stick'em up. And wave hello.
