While in Harrisonburg, I worked the sports desk at the Daily News-Record, and it was there that I learned how to spell Rappahannock. Gary Michael, who is now the sports information director at JMU, was on the staff of the Daily News-Record and taught me how to spell the home of the Golden Panthers.
But I obviously couldn’t stay at JMU forever.
Schools officials there threw a degree my way in 1979 and I went to work at the Shenandoah Valley-Herald, a weekly newspaper in Woodstock, two mountaintops to the west, where I worked until last week.
I resigned because the editor of the Valley-Herald quit to start his own competing paper. Rather than risk competing with a friend, my job-hunting landed me here in Little Washington. My apartment/house-hunting, however, kept me lead-footed in Woodstock, about 45 miles and 75 minutes from here.
