Senators split on budget

Virginia’s two U.S. senators split their votes on the 1986 budget resolution approved by Congress, but both agreed the deficit is still out of control.

Sen. Paul S. Trible Jr. voted with the majority in favor of the resolution, saying, “This action is better than no action to restrain spending, but massive deficit problems will continue to haunt us.”

John W. Warner, Virginia’s other Republican senator, said Congress failed to reduce federal spending “and failed to put the brakes on our growing federal deficit.”

Sen. Warner was one of 32 senators who voted against the budget resolution passed Thursday that reduces next year’s spending by $57 billion. The resolution would leave the government with an estimated $172 billion in red ink.

A tough day for Wilder
