The doctrine was that all power came from God, hence a powerful person had divine right and God was on his side. I deny it! Iran today believes and practices this divine right of kings and Hitler revelled in it. Would we be as they? I guarantee that if any one religion were that powerful we would. Iran is as good an example as any. It has ever been so down through the ages until the birth of our grand Constitution which retires gods and religions from politics and gives it to the people. Were we to have waited in 1776 for divine intervention we would today be under British rule. It was remarked that we should have waited for an evolutionary change. If our writer means a natural change, that is just what took place. Rebellion is not of Lucifer, but of free hearts demanding a better life on earth.
If Lucifer told mother Eve to rebel when she ate the apple of the tree of knowledge, she should have eaten a whole bushel. Knowledge and the freedom to express it is a basic human right which oftimes must be fought for and won. So it has ever been and is being challenged in South Africa even as I write. All have the right to speak what we know and even what we think we know. We have the right to err.
Our honest contributor of last week does not know Lucifer to be the author of rebellion. He has only an ancient Hebrew account of such and he believes it. Believing does not make it so. There is no evidence whatever that any gods or devils ever interfered in the affairs of human kind. . .except in folk tales of witches, bogies, gremlins, prophets, wizards and demons. I, by reason, must rest my faith upon sterner stuff.
Aside from greed and human misunderstanding, if one really wishes to see the germ behind much of history’s armed conflicts, you needn’t look to the devil. Look to intolerance, orthodox religious zeal and prejudice. Take a long look at the crusades where Christians murdered Turks and Jews. Read with horror of the inquisitions where the church was behind the butchery of millions. All in God’s name. . .no Lucifer. .
