Baylus Whorton, a native of Rappahannock County, recently attended the first reunion of the USS McDermut held in Philadelphia. Whorton was bom in Rappahannock and lived in the county until he entered the service.
The McDermut, a fletcher-class destroyer, was part of Squadron 54 stationed in the South Pacific during WW II. Whorton, a Seaman firstclass, served as the ship’s carpenter apprentice and first-loader on a five inch gun.
The reunion, held 40 years after the war’s end, included a tour of the USS Olympia and submarine Becuna, as well as a visit to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.
Baylus Whorton now lives in Centreville with his wife, the former Lois Utzof Estes.
