All religions agree on just one point and that is that all other religions are liars. Methinks they know each other well. Do you know that each time a Christian army prepares to go into battle that a chaplain leads a prayer to entice God to help win this fray because he knows they are in the right? That they are right is assumed by both sides and each pray the same prayer. (A sort of “My God can lick your God” approach.) Do you think that any omnipotent being would stoop so low as to take sides and aid in such an affair? Yet, if we believe the Old Testament stories, we find nothing pleased God so much as a lot of blood and guts. I deny it!
As narrow-minded and self-righteous as our pilgrim fathers were, they believed all other faiths to be false and that somehow God favored them. Whatever orthodox church you join feels the same way. This is why we have religious denominations. If all religions are wrong but one, why not make it 100 percent and include them all?
The leaders of the American Revolution were not using Bibles to guide them. In fact, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and others did not believe the Bible stories at all and Jefferson and Paine wrote book? to that effect. Those great founding fathers of ours also saw to it that gods were purposely left out of our Constitution. This has been to their everlasting credit.
I find it laughable (or sad) that anyone could believe the 13 colonies broke the will of God to rebel for freedom, then turn right around and boldly state that God was fully behind the movement once it was underway. Quite liberal of the Almighty to admit she was mistaken.
While reason prohibits me from believing that Jonah was ever swallowed by a whale, common sense tells me I must agree with perhaps the most important issue of that letter. We must continue, together, to search for a lasting peace on this planet.
The Golden Rule doesn’t have to come of a god to be a good rule. It is good all by itself. . .be it written by you or me or even the devil. It is self-evident. As much as I abhor any deployment of force or power (armed or otherwise), I must believe that truths and freedoms are worth fighting for.
