The Breeze is generally considered to be one of the best college newspapers in the country.
While in college, McFarlane worked as an sports intern for the Harrisonburg Daily News-Recard.
McFarlane joined the Valley - Herald in September 1979 as a general assignment news reporter, regularly covering the Shenandoah County School Board and two town councils. In addition, he wrote sports stories, features, columns and had photographs published in the Valley-Herald.
He won VPA writing awards for sports writing, feature writing and for a series of stories.
As news editor, McFarlane was part of the a team to redesign the Valley-Herald in October of 1984.
“I think the Rappahannock News has the potential to be one of the best small weekly newspapers in Virginia.” McFarlane said. “In fact, I’ve been telling the staff that we can immediately produce a newspaper of that quality.”
McFarlane said he plans to include more feature material, beef up the content of the editorial page to feature more local copy, including columns submitted by local writers.
