riere is an oia gospel song which says “Thy word is liice a garden, Lord” and then goes on to talk about the rich harvest we can gather there. The Spirit himself exhorts each of us to “study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).
One of the richest fields in this garden is the field of prophecy. Even much of the Bible which is now history was prophecy when it was written. Prophecy covers many different subjects, but the unifying factor in all of it is that it points to the Lord Jesus Christ (Revelation 19:10). Apart from himself and his work, prophecy would be of little value to us, but in relation to him it is of great value and of great interest.
The field of prophecy is also a field, however, in which the enemies of the gospel can “make hay.” Prophetic passages of the Bible have primary, God-intended meanings, and are not to be given private (personal) interpretations other than what God intended (2 Peter 1:20). Yet, in his infinite wisdom, God has given prophecy to us in language which can be given personal interpretations by those who either desire to twist God’s word, or have been misled, or will not do the work involved to find out what God really meant.
