An accusation that unexploded dynamite lies abandoned in the old Flint Hill quarry has prompted the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors to seek an investigation by demolitions experts.
“I worked in that quarry for 17 years, and there’s dynamite left in the holes,” charged Ellis Burnett. “I was blowed up with it,” he said, showing the Supervisors his crippled hand, scarred lip and hearing aid. “I just thought you should know.”
The suprise allegation came as the Supervisors were considering an application from a Haymarket builder to use the quarry as a debris landfill.
At Monday’s public hearing on the application for a solid waste disposal system, Harry List, president of List Excavating in Gainesville, said he plans to haul six to nine loads a day to the old Flint Hill quarry for disposal. The loads, from construction sites in Fairfax and Prince William counties, would consist of “stumps and brush we can’t chip...no garbage,” Mr. List said.
