The contributions sought from local governments are based on the populations of the five counties, she said. Madison County’s supervisors have already given $700 and requests are currently being considered by boards in Fauquier and Orange, Mrs. Robson said, reporting that printing the brochures is expected to cost $6,500. She described the contributions from the local governments as “seed money.” “We expect membership fees to keep it going,” she said, reporting that the Association plans a membership drive in October.
“I hope you’ll get behind us,” she told the Supervisors. “Without government’s cooperation, this is going to fizzle ... We need your spiritual and vocal cooperation in addition to the couple of dollars we’ve asked for. ”
“Is this the role of government?” asked Supervisor Newbill Miller. “This is a private venture. It ought to be funded privately,” he said, maintaining that a donation of tax dollars would be “precedent setting.”
