He noted the study was endorsed by "every single (commission) member, regardless of the'geographical region from which they came or their philosophical approach to politics and government.”
While the governor admitted many have expressed “reservations” about the proposals, he stressed the package “represents the closest thing to a consensus that the legislature’s likely to experience.”
To critics who contend the tax proposals are unfair, inadequate or excessive, Gov. Baliles responds: “It is a realistic approach to present day problems that will require revenue. We’re really not talking about taxes for the sake of taxes. We’re talking about revenues for roads. We can’t build roads with a wish.”
He added that the recommendations “will be thoughtfully and perhaps heatedly debated, but I think the essential elements and the bottom line will be basically there when the legislature leaves.”
