Washington: tranquility

To the editor:

Please extend to the residents of the “First of the First” town of Washington, VA our thanks for the pleasant hours we spent getting to know part of your area, its history, and a few of your people.

While driving into Washington two weeks ago, we were intrigued by the historical marker “First of the First” and stopped by to learn more and to inquire about the Inn whose praises have been sung far and wide among connoisseurs of fine dining. Our first approach, as is our habit upon entering an unfamiliar community, was to visit the local coffee shop and ask questions. After a piece of delicious pie and coffee at Brambles Cafe, we got directions to the Historical Society on Gay Street where we learned a little of the town’s past and purchased the Walking Tour pamphlet. Our time was short, so we made reservations at the Inn for the following week and.looked forward to our return.

On Thursday we returned early enough (we thought) to do the walking tour before dinner. Because of the friendly conversations we had with people along the way, and a delightful visit to Ruby’s charming Museum, we could complete only part of the tour. Dinner at the Inn was one of the most exquisite mealtimes we have ever spent, even surpassing those in our beloved Vienna, Austria.

The point of this letter is simply this: in your First of the First Washington, we, as visitors for a mere few hours, found at least two places of which your town should be extremely proud: Ruby’s Museum and the Inn. Their charm and professionalism enriched our lives greatly.

We look forward to returning soon, completing our walking tour, revisiting the Museum and the Inn and perhaps finding some more gems. We hope your town will never lose the spirit of tranquil elegance it now has.
