If it can’t be handled by him then it went to the head of that year, then to the deputy head, then to the head. They’re hoping that you’ll get to know the same student year after year and you’ll be able to deal with it at the lower levels.

“Also, as a homeroom teacher, because of the pastorial system, I had to deal with the discipline in that particular room. I had to write an evaluation of how I felt a problem student was progressing for that year. I had one period a week where I would teach the homeroom students about learning skills, how to take notes, how to get along better with their friends, parent/child relationships, or how to select careers.

“At age 13 a lot of them are undecided about their careers. A lot of that has to do with the fact of second and third generation unemployment.

“The area that I taught in is a depressed area for work. It was the hub of the Industrial Revolution with steel, coal, and limestone being the three main ingredients. Up until the 50’s these people were making more than people working in London. But because of the recession and less need for so much steel a lot of the places closed down. So there’s a lot of unemployment in Birmingham, the second largest city in England. It has over two million people.

“They were good kids. They were similar to Rappahannock kids in the respect that they were well disciplined and respectful.
