A remarkable lady
This Saturday Mary Botts Quaintance, with :assistance from a few of her friends, will celebrate her 80th birthday with a party at the Rappahannock Elementary School. It is indeed fitting that an open invitation was issued to the residents of Rappahannock to attend the celebration, since almost all the residents of the county have been touched by this remarkable woman during some point in their lives.
In her more than half a century of service to the county and its schools, Mrs. Quaintance has been a part of some innovations which were, at the time, considered bold ideas indeed. The dental health program, which she was responsible for, is something which might be taken for granted now but was truly a novel concept at the time.
And not only was her idea novel; so were her methods for encouraging her students to participate. Offering reticent children a ride in the rumble seat of her car as encouragement to visit the dentist, instituting the May Day celebration which had as a prerequisite for participation a visit to the dental clinic ~ these are but two examples of Mrs. Quaintance’s willingness to go far beyond what was expected of her as an educator.
But more important than the vision of her ideas is What that concern expresses about Mrs. Quaintance: she CARED! -- and she continues to care, about her friends, about the county schools, about everyone in Rappahannock. As she herself said, “I’m always on the go and I always will be, I guess.” She may have retired in name, but Mrs. Quaintance continues to be every bit as active as she was during the many years she spent as a teacher and principal in Rappahannock County.
