Sisters who are staying at D.C. General, George Washington and Georgetown Hospitals spent a long weekend at Avon Hall as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Carrigan. Their only break between summer school and the fall schedule was to explore the many beautiful drives and scenery around Washington, Va.
Miss Carolyn Johnston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Morgan Johnston of Washington, Va. won a bicycle by saving the wrappers from Lucky Star notebook paper and other paper products made by this company. It took her two years to collect 1,400 wrappers for the bicycle.
Mr. Paul R. Hockman, owner of Paul’s Maytag in Front Royal, was one of 70 persons who left from Friendship International Airport Tuesday morning aboard a chartered jet for a week in Panama and Jamaica. Mr. Hockman had won this all expense paid trip offered by the Gibson Manufacturing Company for selling more than his annual quota of appliances. Some of these were sold to Rappahannock customers.

Farmers in Rappahannock
County made out better last year, in terms of gross income, than did farmers in most parts of the United States. Their overall receipts, on a per capita basis, were above average, according to a nation wide survey of farm and ranch operations. They were able to produce and market more than they had for a long time. Generally favorable weather was an important factor.
According to the weather records kept by Miss Ruby Jenkins at Washington, there have been 57 days this summer when the temperatures reached over 90 degrees. The temperature registered over 85 degrees for 81 days. Total rainfall for the month of August was 1.25 inches.
Miss Diane Brown, a native of Denton, Maryland and a graduate of Bridgewater College assumed her duties as Extension Agent, Home Economics in Rappahannock County, September 1.
