Supervisor Chairman Hubert Gilkey noted that a petition in favor of approval for the dump had been received; however, the speakers at Monday’s public hearing were opposed.
“I have a big reservation over the possibility of the quarry qualifying at some future point in time as a sanitary landfill” without the site being subjected to the increasingly stringent state regulations governing waste disposal, said Phil Irwin. If the quarry is approved as a debris landfill, it should be with an “absolute restriction” against disposal of anything other than brush and debris, he said.
Peggy Ralph asked if Mr. List had been denied a landfill permit in Fairfax and Prince William counties where the debris will originate.
Mr. List said he had not applied for a dump permit in either of those jurisdictions.
Traffic question
Mrs. Ralph noted that the quarry is adjacent to the town limits of Flint Hill on Route 647, a narrow, curvy road with limited sight distance. Trucks hauling debris to a dump would pose a traffic hazard, she maintained.
