Gov. Baliles supports contact visits; Lt. Gov. Wilder doesn’t. The transportation commission estimates the roadbuilding program will cost $10.2 billion over the next decade. The lieutenant governor believes it will be closer to $13 billion because the commission neglected to account for inflation.
Of the disagreements, the governor said: “You wouldn’t expect total harmony among anybody, including family members. So I’m not surprised.”
Asked if the lieutenant governor’s comments were politically motivated with an eye toward the governorship, Gov. Baliles replied: “I don’t know. I haven’t asked him.”
But he did acknowledge Virginia is ready to elect a black or a woman governor.
• Said he enjoyed most aspects of the office. “It’s intellectually challenging to deal with a variety of issues on a daily basis that you know will affect people in the way they live. That’s the best part.
