He suggested that the Supervisors contact the Virginia Department of Waste Management regarding new regulations which would apply to privately owned landfills. At its inaugural meeting in late July, that department’s board approved emergency regulations which could cut the number of Virginia’s private landfills by more than half, according to Mr. Dennis. The new rules, which will take effect after approval by the governor, require dump owners to prove they have enough money to close the facilities after dumping operations cease. In many cases, owners will also be required to obtain liability insurance to pay for cleanup of pollution, Mr. Dennis noted.
