go to year five which is their final year when they are turning sixteen. They do their exam at age sixteen. Depending on how they do on their exam they may go to what is equivalent to our community college and pick up either better exam results or do further study for their second exam which is called their TA’ level or advanced level. Their advanced level results decide whether they’re going to be accepted into a four year college or a four year Polytech or a University.
“That’s where there’s a big difference in our educational system. Their universities are far above university studies here. The studies that they do in the four years are closer to the studies that we do here to receive a master’s degree.
“Only about twenty percent take the sixteen year exam which is called the TO’ level exam. There is a lesser exam and those exams are for the lesser able. In the sixties and seventies those kids went out and got a job. But now they can’t get jobs so they go on the “dole.” The “dole” is unemployment. To gain unemployment in England you do not have to work ever. The kids see two choices - either collect “dole” or go to college. However, they’re trying to reform all of that but it’s just very slow in occuring.
“The kids specialize even at year three which is at 13 or 14 years old. They are suddenly starting to track toward different subjects. They are being asked what their career decisions are at the age of 13. I found that to be very difficult.”
