I “The deer kill is going well,” re| ported Game Warden Jim Bankston. I “It’s the second best in my time | here, in terms of the number of deer 1 checked.” f Mr. Bankston noted that there seemed to be fewer hunters in the woods on Monday and Tuesday, the first two days of big game season and traditionally the heaviest hunting days. “More were successful,” he added. “Nobody is complaining about not seeing game. ”
“The deer are all healthy and in good shape,” the veteran enforcement agent said, adding that the last several winters have been mild and the herd has apparently been getting plenty to eat.
The average weight for a spike buck is running about 120 pounds, he said. Several county residents checked large bucks, including an 11-pointer killed by Frank Huff Jr. outside Flint Hill, and a 13-pointer checked by Charles W. Sisk at W and J Grocery outside Sperryville.
Sheriff J. H. Woodward said that so far there have not been too many problems. He said only two violations were reported to the Sheriffs Department on opening day.
Both Sheriff Woodward and Warden Bankston urged hunters to be careful in the woods. “Wear blaze orange, and always be sure of your target before you shoot,” Mr. Bankston advised. “And of course, obey the game laws.”
Violations of game laws should be reported to the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department.
