To the editor:
We must respond to last week’s editorial “What about Agriculture?” because it is misleading, inaccurate, and irresponsible. We feel it has done a great disservice not only to us but to this county as well.
The editorial paints us as against migrant housing. In 1979 when George Sharp built the first migrant labor camp near us, we gave him an electric right of way from our property to the labor camp. In 1984 the second and much larger migrant labor camp was built approximately 475 feet from our property line (not “hundreds of yards from their property line” as the editorial states). The conditions of the Special Use Permit governing that migrant labor camp were those Alex Sharp requested and specified: not more than 10 workers, no longer than the apple picking season.
Since 1984 we have had living next to us a year-round labor camp housing as many as 16 men. For us to be construed as against migrant housing (and therefore, by implication, against agriculture) when we finally did speak up seems more than unfair - it seems unfairly biased.
But our most serious objection to this editorial comes from its simplistic view that this disagreement over this migrant labor camp signals the beginning of problems between farmers and non-farmers in Rappahannock County. This is irresponsible
