Heating safely
Hardly a week passes during the fall and winter heating season that there is not a report of a house fire or accident involving a home heating system. Some scenarios seem to repeat themselves more often than others: an improperly vented chirm ney from a wood stove triggers a wall fire . . . firefighters suspect a portable electric heater placed too close to flammable bedding caused a fatal house fire . . . carbon monoxide from an improperly vented gas heater kills a family in their sleep.
Every year at this time, warnings abound about the hazards associated with different types of heat sources. Homeowners and consumers should be well aware of the dangers and the precautions necessary while heating with furnaces, space heaters, wood stoves, kerosene heaters, portable electric heaters, even fireplaces and chimneys.
