Ms. Saltonstall posed another question: “How about underground storage tanks for fuel, oil, or chemicals. Does the ordinance
regulate them? That would be very difficult to enforce. I have an overall concern about monitoring.”
She added that several wells in Culpeper County have been polluted by chemical seeping from corroded underground storage tanks. They are common on farms, she said.
“If we pass the ordinance,” Mr. Wickens replied, “we’ll do our best - that’s more than is being done now. It would be preferable for the county to enact such an ordinance - but they aren’t - so we will act.”
Mayor Morehouse said, “The ordinance is intended to protect a densely populated area. The water situation in town - there is a high toxicity in private wells due to lack of management in the past. .. We have a small budget, less than $15,000 a year. We
can’t go sinking a 600-foot well - or truck in water from West Virginia - if our aquifer gets contaminated.”
