and comfortable house of worship at a cost of about $1,800 which sum. has been raised mainly amongst themselves.” The congregation of St. Paul’s in Woodville, which numbered only ten, contributed $100 - a goodly sum at that time - toward the construction of Trinity Church. Following the death of his wife, the Rev. Mr. Leavell left Brumfield Parish in 1859. He summed up his work in the parish in his diary: “Looking back on my ministerial work in Madison and Rappahannock Counties, I regard it as the most laborious and painful of a long life of toil and hardship. Yet I can say that I never knew a more loving and kind people to their pastor.” The congregation at Trinity originally numbered only seven, but by 1871, of a total of 53 in Bromfield Parish, 25 communicants were members of Trinity’s fold. Among the names were many of the first families of Rappahannock: Lane, Jett, Green, Willis, Menefee, Browning, Powers, Barksdale, Jones, Henry, Spindle, Moffett, J. T. Fletcher and Hamilton Fletcher. Later in that decade the parish was decimated by the loss of members who left the area, as well as some who withdrew from the parish to join the Reformed Episcopal Church, then being formed in Washington, D.
