“Siting is the most important consideration in a landfill. We hope that they are as concerned about the health and welfare of the citizens of this county as we are. We want to be participants in the siting,” the mayor explained, “because if the water is contaminated, we are the ones with the public responsibility to provide clean water to the citizens of the town. The liability, at that point, is on us.”
“And,” Mr. Morehouse vowed, ‘If that aquifer becomes contaminated, I’ll shut the well down. We won’t pump contaminated water.”
Underground cavern tapped
Figures compiled by Brad Fisher, who oversees the town’s water system, and cited by the mayor, place the proposed landfill site one and a half miles - 8000 feet - from the town’s well, and elevated 200 feet above the well site.
