Wakefield School’s sixth and seventh grade students spent three days in Philadelphia last week, touring historical sites and hiking in Valley Forge National Park.
The group left Wakefield on Wednesday afternoon and arrived in Philadelphia late in the evening. They spent the next day at Valley Forge, visiting the Visitors’ Center and hiking eight miles through the park. Of special interest at the Visitors’ Center was the award-winning film about Washington’s winter encampment at Valley Forge entitled The Triumph of Spirit.
Later the students visited Washington’s headquarters where he spent the winter of 1777-78, and the Washington Memorial Chapel, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in America. Returning from their long, cold hike late in the day, the group spent most of the evening relaxing in the hotel’s heated indoor pool.
