Still, in 1984 alone, heating equipment caused 192,000 fires. They resulted in more than 700 deaths, 2,600 injuries and property losses of more than $600 million. Much of that suffering could have been prevented if proper precautions had been taken.
The U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers the following advice for getting safely through the winter heating season:
• Find the owner’s manual for your heating system and read the section on maintenance. It will provide information on periodic inspections and likely problem areas. While the manual is handy, read the entire booklet to refamiliarize yourself with the operation of the system. Keep the manual in a place where you can find it if you need to refer to it during the winter.
