“I’m glad none of the supervisors chose to attend the basketball game Friday night,” Rappahannock’s varsity basketball coach Gary Leake said. “We didn’t have a seat for them. I think we could have filled the Superdome. We had to turn people away because we couldn’t seat enough. When it gets to that point, something desperately needs to be done.”
In an interview with the Rappahannock News Monday, Coach Leake spoke out in support of the capital outlay program proposed for the high school, which includes a new 750-seat gymnasium. The Board of Supervisors will make a decision on whether to approve the loan following a public hearing this evening.
“The athletic program at RCHS has changed drastically in the past 10 years . . . it’s time for new facilities. The athletic program has expanded - and we need to expand to keep up. Otherwise the program and the students will suffer in the long run,” the coach said.
Coach Leake, an RCHS alumnus and a member of the varsity basketball team for three years, noted that six years ago, when he was a senior, “12 kids tried out for the varsity team, and 12 made the team. This year we had 25 kids out for the varsity, 32 for JV, and 24 boys came out for the eighth grade team. That’s 81 kids trying out for 45 total spots.”
