Records are scanty as to whether presidents after Pierce kept up the tree tradition, until Benjamin Harrison in 1889 launched the now unbroken string of White House trees, announcing that “we should make merry for children at Christmas time.”
Grover Cleveland was the first president to use electric lights on a tree — the Harrisons could have done so, but were reportedly afraid of electricity.
Theodore Roosevelt once sought to discourage the tradition, fearing that if it caught on the forests would be depleted.
