Following the example of Falls Church, the Rappahannock School Board plans to incorporate lessons on child abuse into a comprehensive program on child safety.
Mary Beth Williams, the social worker with the Falls Church public schools who recently conducted an in-service training seminar on child abuse for Rappahannock teachers, told the School Board last Tuesday that in her opinion, “a one-shot ap, proach is just not enough.”
Addressing the problem of child abuse with a one-time dramatic presentation, such as the play Hugs and Kisses “scares people,” Mrs. Williams said. Often children are not adequately prepared, and should reports of abuse follow the presentation, community resources are insufficient to handle the load, she said.
In the Falls Church schools, child abuse is covered in the health curriculum presented to third, fifth and sixth graders and then followed up in a strong family life education program at the middle school level, Mrs. Williams reported.
