It was during the Middle Ages, approximately 410 AD, when the Christians began to use some of the pagan customs. Candles used by the pagans as symbols of the vitalizing sun and for protection against plague, pestilence, and famine, became the Christian symbol of Christ as the “Light of the World.”
The Church also allowed the decoration of its houses of worship with plants and flowers as a symbol of victory and glory in Christ. The pagans used these decorations as a guard against witches, thunder and lightning.
During the Reformation of 1517, there was open warfare against all religious feast days and customs.. Christmas was banned in Scotland in 1583 and in England when the Puritans took control.
After the death of Cromwell and the ascension of Charles II to the British throne in about 1660, the Restoration period began and Christian festivals were restored. Christmas has, remained-, a holiday ,1 celebrated ,. j by Christians ever since.
