The holidays, especially Christmas, put a large number of demands on our time and energy. It may require much more patience and planning than usual. In addition, the holiday season often injects more stress into the lives of people who already feel overwhelmed.
There are two basic forms of stress: stress of physical exertion and the stress of mental or emotional activity.
It is interesting to note that emotional stress, such as the death of a spouse or the breakup of a love relationship, is considered more damaging than physical stress. Emotional stress is more likely to produce disease or ulcers.
Our body usually tells us when we are under too much stress. A high level of anxiety, increased irritability, feelings of depression and difficulty controlling emotions are some of the psychological symptoms.
Physical symptoms of stress can include severe fatigue, headaches, gastro-intestinal upset and excessive sweating. Stress can also impair concentration and contribute to indecisiveness and forgetfulness. Being aware of the signs is the first step toward correcting the problem.
