The beginning
of Christmas
Many centuries ago, Christmas, a vigil looking for the coming of Christ, was celebrated on Jan. 6. This celebration was called Epiphaneica and was used to “signify the coming of God to the world as manifested in Jesus Christ as revealed at the time'of His birth and baptism by John the Baptist,”
The persecution of Christians in Rome put a stop to all celebrations and caused the Christians to go into hiding. In 313 AD, their persecution ended and the Church honored three new festivals, one of which was Christmas.
There was some difficulty among the Christians in Jerusalem as they celebrated Christ’s birth in Jerusalem the morning of Jan, 6 and then rushed 12 miles to the River Jordan to celebrate the Baptism. As a convenience to these Christians,. the Church assigned the* date of Dec. 25
