It’s Christmas at Mount Vernon.
George Washington strides with dignity through the drawing roqnjr He’s dressed for a holiday reception, his hair generously powdered, wearing a coat and breeches of blue velvet, a pearlcolored vest, yellow gloves, silver knee and shoe buckles, a cocked hat in his hand and at his side, a long sword with a glistening steel belt and a scabbard of polished white leather.
He waits for the arrival of his guests. Tables overflow with food: hams from the smokehouse, . oysters and fish from nearby waters, veal and capon raised at the farm, jams, jellies and other condiments from the cellars of Squire Washington’s mansion on the Potomac, rich cakes and fruit-filled pies baked by Mistress Martha’s kitchen help in the weeks before the holidays.
