Lighting of the living national tree on the Ellipse took place Dec. 11, opening the annual Christmas Pageant of Peace.
Traditionally, President and Mrs. Reagan threw the switch lighting the tree - an event that has occurred annually since 1923 when Calvin Coolidge did the honors.
In most years the incumbent president has presided at the ceremony, although an occasional vice president has filled in.
In 1979 and 1980 only the top ornament was lighted, as a gesture to the Americans held hostage in Iran.
While there has been a national tree outside of the White House since the Coolidge administration, the tannenbaum tradition showed up inside the executive mansion much earlier.
The White House tree this year was donated by the winners of a contest sponsored by the growers group, as has been done since 1966.
