George Smoot
George Godfrey Smoot, 79, a farmer of Washington, died Dec. 15 at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal. Mr. Smoot was born in Rappahannock County, the son of the late George Thomas and Etta B. French Smoot.
His wife Mary Elizabeth Anderson Smoot predeceased him.
Surviving are four sons, Harry R. Smoot, George G. Smoot Jr. and Charles W. Smoot, all of Washington, and Alex P. Smoot of Front Royal, two daughters, Mary E. Jenkins of Washington and Martha V. Martson of Woodstock, 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He also leaves four sisters, Sadie Foster of Washington, Annie Foster of Warrenton, Beatrice Fletcher and Carrie Kines, both of Front Royal, and five brothers, Harvey Smoot, Clabert Smoot and Billy Smoot, all of Washington, Arthur Smoot of Flint Hill and Bernard Smoot of Long Beach, Miss.
A funeral service was conducted Dec. 17 at Thornton Gap Regular Baptist Church, near Sperryville, by Rev. John K. Burke, assisted by Rev. Kirby Shenk. Interment was at Washington Masonic Cemetery.
