Walter Frye answered for Rappahannock, adding a field goal with 1:29 left on the clock to bring the game within one, 62-61. Richard Tribino went to the foul line after a Cougar miscue with just over one minute to go. He sank his first attempt but missed tfie second,”Jying the game again at 62.
Using a delay strategy, Manassas Park got within nine seconds of running out the clock, but what should have been a routine pass “around the horn” to kill the clock bounced off the chest of the Cougar wing. Richard Tribino snatched up the loose ball and was fouled as the Manassas Park player tried to recoup his mistake.
Tribino went to the line and sank both attempts, putting the Panthers up by two, 64-62. Rappahannock controlled the Cougars on defense and ran out the final nine seconds. A last second “Hail Mary” attempt by Baltimore, followed by his own rebound, failed to drop.
“At the pep rally today, I told the students about Bill Walsh of the San Francisco 49ers,” Coach Leake said. “I told them that the crowd can be like an extra man on the court. They really came through tonight, especially with it being the first homecoming. I couldn’t ask for any more.”
