“We teach children not to run out in the driveway because it isn’t safe . . . We should teach them that you don’t do certain things and that you don't allow others to do certain things to you,” Mrs. Massie agreed.
The board directed Superintendent Robert Estabrook to review the curriculum and other materials brought by the Falls Church social worker and propose a plan for developing a child safety program, with particular emphasis on involving the public in its formulation.
“What works in Falls Church might not work in Rappahannock,” Mrs. Williams noted, adding that the same concepts can be presented in a manner that’s appropriate for the community. In getting support for a child safety program, “it’s so important to have parental involvement,” she said, suggesting that meetings be scheduled to ask parents what dangers THEY would warn their children about. *
