reporting that one out of every four girls and one in seven boys will be sexually abused in some way before reaching the age of 18. She acknowledged that the numbers sound inflated but told the school board that in 1,400 interviews she’d conducted for her own research project, “I discovered that the statistics are valid. They’re holding up.” And of those cases of abuse, 85 percent will involve “someone the child knows, loves and trusts; someone who is not a stranger,” Mrs. Williams said.
“Go into any classroom in a school and you’ll find at least one or two children who’ve been abused in some manner,” she told the School Board. “Nationwide, at least one million children are maltreated by their parents every year. Three thousand of those children will die,” the social worker continued.
Fourteen children died of abuse or neglect in Virginia last year. The state’s Social Services Department investigated 49,765 complaints of child abuse in 1985 and determined that 16.7 percent - or 8,303 cases - were absolutely founded, Mrs. Williams said. “There were an additional 3,920 in which abuse was strongly suspected but there just wasn’t enough proof.”
