Forty Wakefield sixth and seventh graders returned home late last week from a three-day trip to New York City. Weary from much walking, train delays, and extremely frigid weather, the students were nonetheless still excited by their adventures in the Big Apple and eager to talk about their trip.
Most of the students seemed struck by the contradictions of the city. One student exclaimed, “In one block of Manhattan, I saw about twenty stretch limousines and as many homeless people sleeping on the street!” While the students were' impressed by the friendliness of most of the people they met, some were intimidated by the harshness of a few bad-mannered natives. One child summarized these feelings neatly with, “They either love you or hate you in this city. There’s no middle ground.”
