Travelling by AMTRAK from Washington, the group arrived in New York just in time to catch a crowded rush-hour subway train to their hotel in mid-town Manhattan. Later that evening they strolled down 5th Avenue to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Plaza before attending the Broadway play Starlight Express.
On the second day of their visit to New York, the students toured Federal Hall and Wall Street and ate lunch at historic Fraunces Tavern. Later they boarded a boat for the Statue of Liberty, which they climbed all the way to the crown. Afterwards, they viewed clipper ships and shopped at the South Street Seaport, a relatively new attraction in the city.
