The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee is considering the Roth-Bradley Wilderness Bill, S. 1804, which would designate the coastal plain as wilderness, thus putting it off limits for oil and gas exploration. Committee member Hon. John Warner, U.S. Senate, Washington, D.C. 20510, should be written at once with request to cosponsor S. 1804 and to oppose any oil development in the Arctic Refuge coastal plain, any “compromise” allowing use of oil money for wildlife habitat acquisition in the lower 48 States, or “trading” other public lands for the Refuge coastal plain.
Perhaps the most environmentally-destructive pursuit of the twentieth century is the quest for energy sources. Sensible stewardship of natural resources is not fostered in our present political climate. The only antidote to this cavalier attitude on the part of many of our decision makers is an informed and concerned citizenry. Senator Warner should be contacted without delay! SARAH P. FAULCONER
