Christmas is colonial in Washington, Va., the little town laid out almost two and a half centuries ago in the Blue Ridge mountain foothills by a young field surveyor named George Washington.
On Dec. 5 and 6, gentlemen in knee breeches and ladies in hoop skirts will lead hourly tours, taking up candle lanterns as dusk falls. Costumed carolers will stroll the streets, singing the traditional favorites that evoke fond memories of past holidays.
In the galleries and shops, costumed dancers step through the elegant minuet, troubadors recite ballads and tales, and musicians play baroque and renaissance chamber music.
