In Largo, Maryland, for last Tuesday’s meeting of the Washington Bypass Study Interagency Task Force, Bellomo-McGee, Inc. unveiled maps showing 48 different corridor segments which can be mixed and matched into 435 or more possible routes for a new superhighway bypassing the Washington metropolitan area - and that’s just for a western route proposed to run from Interstate 95 at Fredericksburg through Prince William, Fauquier, and Loudoun counties with a new Potomac River crossing above the District to connect U.S. Route 70 west of Baltimore.
Add the 34 highway segments and 85 combinations possible for an eastern bypass and that makes 520 options to pick from in selecting the finalists, two going east and two going west, to be put to detailed analysis.
“In order to determine whether it’s going to be west or east or both, we really have to get down to two basic corridors (in each direction),” said Neil Pederson, director of the Office of Planning and Preliminary Engineering for the Maryland State Highway Administration. “The hope is that by the end of October we’ll have it narrowed down.”
