The Shenandoah Valley’s most famous Revolutionary War hero, General Peter Muhlenberg, will be honored Saturday, Oct. 1, in Woodstock.
A bronze bust of Muhlenberg, “the fighting parson,” will be dedicated in front of the historic Shenandoah County Courthouse, just steps from where the patriot preached his famous sermon calling parishoners to join the Revolution.
The dedication culminates a project launched by the Narrow Passage Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in July, 1984 and officially announced on Friday, September 13, 1985.
The bust was carved by Caroline Muhlenberg Hufford-Anderson, a direct descendent of Muhlenberg, and other direct descendents from California, Pennsylvania and Virginia will dedicate and unveil the statue.
Muhlenberg was already a newly commissioned colonel in the Continental Army when'he preached “. . . there is a time for war and a time for peace—and this is the time for war!” Throwing back his clerical robes to reveal the uniform beneath, he quickly enlisted hundreds of recruits on the spot.
Rising to the rank of general, Muhlenberg was responsible for the entire Virginia line and led his troops through some of the fiercest fighting of the Revolution. The general also commanded the winning charge against Cornwallis during the Battle of Yorktown with Alexander Hamiltion as his junior officer.
