With the coming of fall after the summer’s drought one might think that the last thing needed is a reminder of anything dry.
But for the past 32 years on the third weekend of October the Women of Bromfield Parish, Trinity Episcopal Church have sponsored the annual House Tour and Dried Flower Sale in historic Washington, Va. and this year is no exception.
This ever-popular event has been drawing visitors from the Midwest, the deep South, New England and this year there was even a request for information from Hawaii.
Preparations begin in the spring with planting of seeds and shoots for later cutting, drying and otherwise preserving. Vases, pots, bowls and baskets are collected to contain the hundreds of arrangements produced and offered for sale these two days in October.
These arrangements include not only the flowers grown in the many gardens of the county but also those growing wild in Rappahannock’s meadows and woods, nor do they include only flowers, but also ferns, grasses and weeds like milkweed, tobacco weed, goldenrod and wild
