There was agreement among the Amissville residents who spoke at the Virginia Department of Transportation’s location and design hearing on Jan. 25: Route 639, the dirt road which leads north from Route 211 to the county’s landfill, desperately needs improvement.
Several, however, disputed the wisdom of VDOT spending $413,000 on the project, especially if the county’s estimate of up to 40 years of life at the landfill proves wrong.
According to VDOT Resident Engineer Robert Moore, the highway department intends to regrade the narrow dirt road, flattening some of the hills and rerouting the road at one particularly narrow and sharp comer.
