Updike wins
4-H awards
Jennifer Updike of Newsoms, Va., was selected as the national winner at the National Junior Horticultural Association Convention ini Chicago. Miss Updike’s demonstration on the uses of fruits and vegetables was judged the best from 4-H state winners from across the country.
Miss Updike, who is the grand-' daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Updike of Washington, was also chosen to serve as a page with the North' Carolina Department of Transportation during 4-H Week last fall. Pages, are chosen on merit after having* been recommended by local 4-H leaders.
The pages assist the various departments of the state government in their communications with other, departments. The young people are also given the opportunity to touf the state capital, museums, the governor’s mansion and other sights in Raleigh.
North Carolina Governor Jiih Martin instituted the page program for the state’s high school students. “This is an excellent opportunity for outstanding young people like Jennifer to learn about state govern-, ment,” Gov. Martin said.
“In addition, Governor’s paged provide invaluable assistance in helping to maintain the smooth and efficient operation of state govern-*, ment,” Gov. Martin added. t
Miss Updike is a junior at South-i hampton Academy. Her trip to Chicago was sponsored by a scholarship; from Southern States Co.

The Task Force is currently collecting infor1 mation about center-based, childi' care facilities, preschools and “moth-5 er’s day out” programs.
