“If bent neck starts to happen, make another cut in the bottom of the stem and take the whole flower and put it in a long pan of warm water,” McDaniel said. “It should be completely submerged.”

That process may get more water to the top of the flower to correct the bend.

Bent neck is not an indication of the quality of the roses, McDaniel said, nor does the color of the rose make any difference. If all else fails, green floral wire spiraled around the stem will support the flower head.

The roses sold in Virginia florists’ shops around Valentine’s Day — while they probably come from out-of-state — are generally fresh, high-quality flowers, he said.

So if your sweetheart brings you those fabled flowers of love for Valentine’s Day, a little care will go a long way toward preserving their beauty throughout the week.
