The Panthers committed just four turnovers in the first half, but two came in the opening seconds to enable Stonewall to grab a 2-0 advantage. It was the only time in the game the Generals would epjoy such a luxury.
The spell was broken when Danny Ellis grabbed an offensive rebound and layed it in for the Panthers first bucket, then Dunn stole the ball and scored for a 4-2 lead and Rappahannock never looked back.
Ellis sparked the Panthers with a brilliant first period on both offensive and defensive ends of the court. He scored his sixth point following a steal to give his team a 10-4 edge, and Rappahannock was on top 20-10 after one period.
The second quarter seemed to last forever due to a combined 23 fouls called. At the 5:30 mark Ellis drove the lane for a 34-17 lead and was awarded the chance for a threepoint play. But following the miss Anthony Porter was whistled for his third foul and then rode the bench for the rest of the half.
Mike Payne did a strong job in relief and RCHS built a 46-23 margin at halftime. The Panthers hit 59 percent of their shots in the first half and 11 of 13 from the foul line; the Generals had 18 chances at the charity stripe and hit 11.
The Panthers started the second half by connecting on their first four shots and widened the gap 54-30. They continued to apply defensive pressure: Julian Groves stripped the ball from a Generals’ guard and found Dunn on the wing for a 68-35 lead.
Rappahannock scored 22 points off Stonewall’s turnovers and 26 points came off the fast break. The Panthers had a balanced attack with 12 players scoring, three in double figures lead by Dunn’s 23. Julian Groves had 14 and Doug Smith chipped in 10.
